Frequently asked questions – Spring Break 2019

Posted by peytonvsmith on February 8, 2019

Hi everyone! It’s getting to be that time of the year and I thought I would answer some questions here. Please feel free to leave questions in the comments, email us or give us a call.

  • We often get asked “What it means?” that we don’t take reservations in March. That means we are first come first serve. We have never turned anyone away. Worst case scenario, RVs can dry camp and we open up more property for people to pitch tents.
  • We are 8 miles from the main entrance to the park.
  • We are not located in the town of Alpine, regardless of our address. The last town you pass through should be Marathon.
  • We do not have diesel but it is available in Marathon and the park.
  • We do not fill propane.
  • We do not sell permits for Black Gap WMA. You can get those anywhere you get a hunting and fishing license. Come prepared as the closest place is in Alpine.
  • We do allow fires most of the time. They must be in a designated fire ring and if the wind is up we may ban fires.
  • You must receive permission ahead of time to go horse back riding on the ranch. Call before you come out and speak to John.
  • You cannot ride your horses from our property to Dog Canyon in BBNP. There is private property that lies between.
  • We do not allow drones.
  • We only allow rock hunting/ hiking in designated areas, please ask in the store if your not sure where you can explore.  Rock Hunting
  • We do have some basic supplies here in the store but we recommend you stop in either Alpine or Fort Stockton to get groceries, etc.
  • We are not affiliated with Big Bend National Park and cannot tell you what the availability is there for camping, lodging, etc.

I hope this is helpful and have a great weekend!

Hi everybody

Posted by peytonvsmith on November 10, 2018

We are currently doing quite a bit of road work but our tent sites and rock hounding area will be open from tomorrow (11/11) on. However, please be aware there will be machinery on the road doing work and exercise appropriate caution.

The Ranch will be closed to all rockhounding from December 1st-16th. We will be able to accommodate tent campers but not out on the ranch. Any tent camping during this time will be done close to the store.

Please call with any questions and have a fantastic weekend!

Road conditions

Posted by peytonvsmith on September 22, 2018

Hi everyone!

Due to recent rain the ranch roads are in very rough shape. We do not recommend traveling the roads to our primitive camping sites but, if you choose to do so it is at your own risk and please exercise extreme caution as there are holes in the road. We can accommodate tent campers closer to the store.

This also applies to rock hunting, there is currently no crossing the creek and we do not have an estimate when this will change.

Thanks

Heads up!

Posted by peytonvsmith on September 8, 2018

We’ve been getting quite a bit of much needed rain in the area. Everything is muddy and/or flooded. FM 2627 sees quite a bit of flooding when we see heavy rain and there will be rocks in the road. If you have any questions, just call us at the store.

Summertime

Posted by peytonvsmith on June 6, 2018

Hi everyone,

Now that summer is in full swing I just wanted to remind everyone that hours for rock hunting become very limited due to the heat and please call ahead of time. If you choose to just show up, you risk not being able to rock hunt and we would hate for anyone to be disappointed. The museum is still open for visitors and we are still open for camping (tents and RV sites) for anyone who can stand the heat.

If you have any questions please give us a call at the store or send us an email!
