Hey everyone!

Posted by peytonvsmith on December 14, 2019

We get a lot of questions about technology out here. There is NO cell service here at the 4L. We do have WiFi available assuming that the wind isn’t blowing and nobody sneezes. Please do not come out with the assumption that the internet will be working well or at all. We do our best to provide decent internet but we are in the middle of nowhere.

Big changes! Read this!

Posted by peytonvsmith on August 13, 2019

Hi everyone,

We’ve had quite a few changes here at the 4L and wanted to fill y’all in.

The ranch portion of the Stillwell property has sold. This means that the majority of what was the primitive area and rock hunting area is now inaccessible. We DO still have tent camping spaces they are just not where they were previously. We do NOT have any rock hunting any longer. We realize how disappointing this is to so many of you and are sorry for that. The store, RV park and museum are still operating as normal. The store, museum and RV park are still under the same ownership and management, any reservations you’ve made previously for future dates are still good.

Give us a call or send us an email with any questions. (432) 376-2244

Seasonal help wanted

Posted by peytonvsmith on June 7, 2019

Hi everyone,

We’ve received the unfortunate news that one of our seasonal volunteers will not be able to return this year. Therefore, we’re looking for some help for the upcoming season. Our volunteers typically bring their own RV down and work for their site rent. Work duties include (but aren’t limited to) working in the store, cleaning, hauling trash, etc. We work as a team here at Stillwell’s and shift around as needed. We hope to have someone start October 1st and an end date of April 1st. We are flexible on these dates but any volunteers must be available in the month of March. We hope to find someone familiar with the area, or who has at least visited before, so that you know what your getting into.

If living just outside of Big Bend for a few months and working for your site rent sounds like something you want to do, send us an email and tell us about yourself!

Frequently asked questions – Spring Break 2019

Posted by peytonvsmith on February 8, 2019

Hi everyone! It’s getting to be that time of the year and I thought I would answer some questions here. Please feel free to leave questions in the comments, email us or give us a call.

  • We often get asked “What it means?” that we don’t take reservations in March. That means we are first come first serve. We have never turned anyone away. Worst case scenario, RVs can dry camp and we open up more property for people to pitch tents.
  • We are 8 miles from the main entrance to the park.
  • We are not located in the town of Alpine, regardless of our address. The last town you pass through should be Marathon.
  • We do not have diesel but it is available in Marathon and the park.
  • We do not fill propane.
  • We do not sell permits for Black Gap WMA. You can get those anywhere you get a hunting and fishing license. Come prepared as the closest place is in Alpine.
  • We do allow fires most of the time. They must be in a designated fire ring and if the wind is up we may ban fires.
  • You must receive permission ahead of time to go horse back riding on the ranch. Call before you come out and speak to John.
  • You cannot ride your horses from our property to Dog Canyon in BBNP. There is private property that lies between.
  • We do not allow drones.
  • We only allow rock hunting/ hiking in designated areas, please ask in the store if your not sure where you can explore.  Rock Hunting
  • We do have some basic supplies here in the store but we recommend you stop in either Alpine or Fort Stockton to get groceries, etc.
  • We are not affiliated with Big Bend National Park and cannot tell you what the availability is there for camping, lodging, etc.

I hope this is helpful and have a great weekend!
